The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has announced that it has begun implementing the key projects under the Second Group of the Riyadh Ring Roads and Main Axes Development Programme, aimed at strengthening the transportation system in the capital.
These include eight major road projects to be developed at a total cost of over SAR8 billion ($2.13 billion), as part of the programme launched by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, who is also chairman of the Board of Directors of RCRC.
The Riyadh Ring Roads and Main Axes Development Programme will contribute to keeping pace with the city's increasing population growth, enhancing the connection of its parts, improving traffic, raising the average speed of movement, and reducing travel time on the road network.
The projects under the Second Group of the Roads Programme include:
*Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz Al-Awwal Road Development Project (northern part) - The scope of work includes construction of a 6-km-long road with two main intersections as well as three bridges, and a tunnel. On completion, it will raise the road's total capacity to 200000 vehicles per day.
*Al-Thumama Road Axis Development Project (middle part) - Development of a 10-km-long road with five main intersections. The scope of work includes construction of 11 bridges and five tunnels, which contributes to raising the road's capacity to 200,000 vehicles per day.
*Imam Abdullah bin Saud Road Development Project - Development of a 9-km-long road with four main intersections. Work includes construction of three bridges, and two tunnels, which contributes to raising the road's capacity to 200,000 vehicles per day.
*Dirab Road Development Project - Development of a 9-km-long road with two main intersections. The work involves construction of nine bridges, thus taking the road's capacity to 340,000 vehicles per day.
*Imam Muslim Road Development Project - Development of a 12-km-long road with four main intersections. The work includes construction of four bridges which will boost the road's capacity to 200,000 vehicles per day.
*King Abdullah Financial Center Road - Development of a 20-km-long road with three main intersections. The scope of work includes construction of 19 bridges.
In addition to this, the programme includes development of a bridge at the intersection of King Salman Road with Abu Bakr Al Siddiq Road and also the 'first package" of a project for improving a group of spots that witness traffic congestion during peak times, it added.
The entire work on these projects will be completed within three years.
The RCRC said the programme is aimed at improving the connection between various roads, and preparing it to be a major centre for providing sustainable transportation and logistics services in the Middle East region.
In addition, it will help elevate the capital Riyadh to the leading position it deserves as one of the world's major cities, in line with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 programmes.
According to RCRC, the work on the First Group of the programme, which includes development of the main and ring roads, began in August last year. It will implement four projects at a total cost of SAR13 billion, it added.-TradeArabia News Service
