Power and Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu (Marafiq) has announced the signing of a 30-year concession agreement with Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Company (Satorp) to develop, operate and maintain an advanced Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant (IWWTP) for the Amiral Facility, currently under construction in Jubail II Industrial City.
The agreement will be executed through a dedicated project company jointly owned by Marafiq (40%), Veolia Middle East (35%), and Lamar Arabia for Energy (25%). The project is valued at around $500 million (SAR1.875 billion) and was awarded on September 8, 2025.
The new facility will implement cutting-edge treatment and recovery technologies to process complex industrial effluents, including spent caustic streams, from the Amiral Facility. Treated water will be reintegrated into the original industrial processes, enabling closed-loop reuse and greater energy efficiency.
“This strategic initiative will enable the efficient recycling of wastewater into demineralised water, directly supporting sustainable operations for the Amiral Project,” Marafiq said in a statement to Saudi Exchange.
The project forms part of Marafiq’s long-term strategy to advance sustainable industrial ecosystems through integrated utility solutions and circular economy practices. By leveraging expertise in water infrastructure and environmental management, the consortium aims to reduce the environmental footprint of industrial operations while maximising resource efficiency.
The initiative further cements Marafiq’s role as a national leader in sustainable infrastructure, contributing to the Kingdom’s broader objectives of environmental resilience and industrial circularity, it said. - TradeArabia News Service
