Bahrain TRA wins online Child Protection Vice-Chair seat at ITU

MANAMA, November 16, 2023

Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has been elected Vice Chair of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council Working Group on Child Online Protection. This is in recognition of the TRA’s years of advocacy for the online safety of kids.

The Council Working Group on Child Online Protection, along with other expert groups within the ITU, comprises an international network of industry professionals dedicated to developing policies and guidelines on child online safety and promoting information sharing.

With the primary objective of raising awareness, the group devises effective strategies to prevent and mitigate the risks children face online.

In this role, the TRA will cultivate international collaboration, facilitate the exchange of insights, and advance the development of tools and technologies aimed at safeguarding children on the Internet.

On the key recognition, TRA Acting Manager of Online Safety May Al Ghatam said: "This appointment is a testament to the Kingdom of Bahrain's pioneering work in protecting children and combating online exploitation. It also highlights the TRA’s long history in this critical domain and its potential to make significant contributions towards strengthening international collaboration."

Since its establishment in 2002, the Bahrain TRA has been working with government, consumers, operators and investors to develop the country into the region’s most modern communications hub and to facilitate the growth of the market.

As an exemplary regulator for the region, TRA Bahrain independently carries out its duties in a transparent and non-discriminatory manner.

"In an era defined by rapid technological change, children face online threats like never before, including bullying, electronic fraud, exposure to inappropriate content, harassment, and much more," stated Al Ghatam.

"To address these concerns, the TRA has worked diligently to safeguard children and raise awareness on how to deal with such challenges," she added.-TradeArabia News Service
