A London-bound Air India flight carrying 244 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad’s Meghani area near the city’s airport Thursday afternoon.
A senior official said the plane crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar. There were 232 passengers and 12 crew members on board, he said.
Further details on the cause of the crash and the status of passengers are awaited.
Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the crash site. Firefighters and emergency response teams have reached the location, and rescue efforts are underway.
The aircraft, a Boeing Dreamliner, took off around 1.47 pm, slightly delayed from schedule. Officials say it crashed 9 minutes after being given clearance for take-off.
The plane lost signal seconds after take-off, reports said.
Following the crash, Air India said in a statement: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”
